CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Authorities say former Somerset County District Attorney Jeff Thomas has pleaded no contest in the domestic violence case involving he and his wife. Officials say Thomas was charged following an investigation into reports that he punched his wife in the head while they were traveling through the Johnstown-area during the early morning hours of May 15, 2021. Prosecutors say Thomas appeared in court Tuesday where he entered the no contest plea to charges of misdemeanor simple assault.
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WTVC) — A new bill in the Tennessee legislature wants to change concealed carry laws throughout the state toinclude all firearms. But opponents, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, are saying the expansion is concerning for law enforcement. House Bill 1005 seeks to change the reference from "handgun" to simply "firearm," allowing citizens to publicly carry semi-automatic weapons. The proposed change raise questions about criminality versus civil liberties. Currently it is legal to carry a handgun through the streets in Tennessee.
SEATTLE — The 35-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his sleeping 9-month-old baby last week was charged with murder on Monday afternoon. Dion Montgomery, 35, was charged with murder in the first degree, two counts of assault in the first degree, and unlawful possession of a firearm in the first degree, according to court documents. Court documents state Montgomery randomly shot at two people unprovoked before ultimately shooting his sleeping 9-month-old child in the eye.
(TND) — California is recruiting drivers for a pilot program intended to address its gas tax shortage. California calls its mileage fee program Road Charge. Oregon calls its program OReGO. States across the country are looking for ways to supplement revenue used to build and maintain public roadways. Oregon was the first state to implement a kind of mileage tax in 2015. Participants there pay 2 cents for each mile they drive, and they have GPS or non-GPS tracking methods.
A 38-year-old Breezewood man has been charged in Altoona, after police allegedly found methamphetamine and a handgun during a traffic stop. According to a probable-cause affidavit, state police found about 10 ounces of meth and a loaded pistol in Brandon Hampton’s vehicle Tuesday in Altoona. A large amount of plastic baggies was also found in the vehicle, according to the affidavit. Hampton is a felon and is not supposed to possess a gun, according to the affidavit.
Over one hundred community members gathered at the Camp Allegheny dining hall Sunday night to honor veterans who died in the global war on terrorism. The Patriot Park Foundation hosted the event, which featured several veterans as speakers. “We said that we would never forget. We’d never forget their efforts, we’d never forget their memories, we’d never forget that they were people just like us that came from all over the country,” says Pennsylvania 37th District Senator Devlin Robinson.
Cambria Co., PA (WJAC) — With about a month left until Halloween, a new haunted house will soon be available to those brave enough to enter. This will be the first year for the "Imaginarium Sanitarium Haunted House," located at the site of the former Cresson Sanitorium in Cambria County. The new haunted house attraction will debut this weekend. The site of the former sanitorium is located at 251 Correction Road in Lilly.
WASHINGTON (TND) — More than three-fourths of Americans view fast food as a luxury, according to a LendingTree survey published last week. The survey found 78% of consumers cited increasingly high prices of fast food items for their assessment. Limited service meals rose 4.8% over the past year in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) released earlier this month. Half of Americans also viewed fast food as a luxury due to their financial struggles, with 71% of those consumers making less than $30,000 per year, according to the survey.
BREEZEWOOD, Pa. (WJAC) — Officials have released more details about the massive fire that broke out at an Econo Lodge in Breezewood this weekend. The fire began Friday night. Officials said it was an electrical fire and 13 people were displaced from the hotel that night. The fire rekindled late Saturday night, engulfing much of the building. Officials said the building is a total loss. No injuries were reported. The fire rekindled again Sunday morning, and crews were on the scene for about three hours to put out the flames.
